Liberia Secures UN Security Council Seat, Foreign Minister Nyanti Praised for Diplomatic Triumph

MONROVIA, June 6 – Liberia is celebrating a significant diplomatic achievement: securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. This historic victory has led to widespread acclaim for Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, whose unwavering leadership and strategic diplomatic efforts are credited with the country’s success.

In an interview aired on state radio on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Josephine Nkrumah, the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, hailed the occasion as a moment of profound joy and pride for the entire West African subregion. Ambassador Nkrumah specifically lauded Minister Nyanti as the “architect of Liberia’s global reawakening.”

“This is not just a victory for Liberia; it is a triumph for West Africa,” Ambassador Nkrumah asserted. She further emphasized, “much of the credit belongs to Foreign Minister Nyanti, whose leadership, determination, and vision guided Liberia through a competitive and complex campaign.”

Ambassador Nkrumah noted that while Liberia’s bid for the seat commenced during the administration of former President George Weah, it gained substantial momentum under President Joseph Boakai. Foreign Minister Nyanti, she explained, expertly spearheaded a more coordinated and impactful diplomatic strategy, effectively translating President Boakai’s vision of re-establishing Liberia’s global standing into tangible results.

“She traveled, engaged, negotiated, and delivered a message of substance, one that resonated across Africa and beyond,” Ambassador Nkrumah recounted.

The ECOWAS Diplomat highlighted that Liberia’s campaign centered on themes crucial to both regional and global concerns, including multilateralism, the empowerment of women and youth in peace and security initiatives, democratic governance, and fostering international cooperation. These priorities, Ambassador Nkrumah stated, significantly bolstered Liberia’s appeal among UN member states.

“The campaign wasn’t just about winning a seat; it was about showing the world that Liberia is ready to lead, to contribute, and to be a voice of peace, inclusion, and development,” Ambassador Nkrumah affirmed.

Ambassador Nkrumah also acknowledged the vital support Liberia received from ECOWAS and the African Union, emphasizing that the endorsement from these regional blocs served as a powerful demonstration of solidarity and a vote of confidence in Liberia’s leadership. “This was an ECOWAS campaign as much as it was Liberia’s. The 15-member states saw their collective interest reflected in Liberia’s message,” she observed.

As Liberia prepares to assume its seat in January 2026, expectations are high for the nation to play a constructive and influential role on the Security Council. The ECOWAS Ambassador expressed confidence that under Minister Nyanti’s continued guidance, Liberia would honor its campaign promises and contribute significantly to shaping key international decisions.

“The world is watching not just because Liberia now sits at the table, but because of the powerful and principled campaign that brought it there,” Ambassador Nkrumah remarked. She expressed optimism that Minister Nyanti has set a high standard and will continue to elevate Liberia’s role in global diplomacy.

With congratulations pouring in from across the continent, many observers view this as a defining moment for Liberia’s foreign policy and a monumental achievement for the Government and people of Liberia.
