Montserrado County District #10 Representative, Yekeh Kolubah, has branded the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) as ‘paid agents’ for preaching the gospel of President George Weah, who has he has termed as a ‘dictator’. He made the comment when he spoke via telephone on a local radio talk show in Monrovia on Monday, 10 August 2020.
The LCC is a conglomeration of Christian churches that have over the years advocated for Liberians and held past government’s feet to the fire for reported human rights violation, bad governance, and corruption, among many others.
Founded in 1983 during the brutal military regime of late Liberian dictator, Samuel Kanyon Doe, its first President was Archbishop George D. Browne of the Episcopal Church of Liberia, who was also Archbishop of the Episcopal Church West Africa Diocese. The LCC first head (now deceased) was noted for brutally speaking truth to power with fear, despite Samuel Doe being a military dictator, and Browne’s outspoken posture won him many admirers locally and internationally.
Catholic Archbishop Michael K. Francis (deceased) succeeded Archbishop Browne and continued the advocacy role without fear or favor as well even during the despotic regime of former President Charles Taylor who is now imprisoned in the UK having being convicted of War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity for aiding and abetting the defunct rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone during that country’s civil war in the 1990s.
Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf once tagged the late Catholic Archbishop as “Conscience of the Nation” due to his astute advocacy to see Liberia becomes a better nation.
Fast forward to 2020, the LCC is headed by Bishop Dr. Kortu Brown of the Water In The Desert Pentecostal Church located in Brewerville in Montserrado County. Kortu’s leadership has come under criticism from Representative Kolubah of District #10, who said the LCC has lost all moral grounds and has become a compromised institution that has refused to speak truth to power in the Weah’s administration.
Representative Kolubah is a staunch critic of the Weah’s administration, accusing it of bad governance, corruption, human rights violation, nepotism, among others. However, when Bishop Kortu was contacted by our staff via mobile phone, he said will respond to the allegation after he listen to the newscast.
Meanwhile, Representative Kolubah has reiterated his interest to contest the Senatorial seat in Grand Gedeh County, stating “my in-laws have asked me to contest because my wife hails from the county.” He disclosed that he has written the Collaboration of Political Parties (CPP) following the decision of his in-laws to petition him to run and now awaits approval from the CCP, a conglomeration of four opposition political parties – All Liberia Party, Alternative National Congress, Liberty and former governing Unity Party.
