LIBERIA: ECOWAS Opens Regional Office In Zwedru

ZWEDRU, April 17 (LINA) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened a Regional Office in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

The Zwedru office will coordinate major activities undertaken by citizens from member countries in the region.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in an interview in Zwedru, Mr. Solo Jabateh, Regional Coordinator for ECOWAS, said the Office will handle series of services, including issuing of insurance, transportation and judicial matters, cross-border travel and citizens residing in the region from any ECOWAS country without proper documentation.

Jabateh also explained that while it is true that all ECOWAS citizens under the law have the right to reside and work in any country of choice in the sub-region, it must be done in accordance with proper immigration policy of such country.

According to Jabateh, many people travelled from countries of origin because of reasons such as war, political, security, and economic situation. and may not want to return to their countries.

“The regional office will liaise with concerned authorities to ensure that their issues be given full attention,” he said.

The ECOWAS regional official lauded the county authority for the support given in ensuring the opening of the office in Zwedru.

He called on every citizen in the region to take advantage of services to be provided at the office.

Liberia is one of 15 founding countries of ECOWAS on May 26, 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria as an economic, social and political bloc covering the West African region currently comprising a population of around 340 million.
