The newly-elected President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), Cllr. Tiawon S. Gongloe has assured members of the Liberian media that he will defend press freedom and freedom of speech by providing free legal services for members of the media.
Gongloe said if democracy should be considered free, there must be a free press and free speech or freedom of expression, saying that under a democratic society no media outlet or journalist should be sued for bringing the truth to the public.
He made the statement in Monrovia recently when he was honored along with five others by the Center for the Promotion of Intellectual Development (CENPID) for their outstanding roles in defending human rights and contributing positively to society and the organization.
Gongloe assured the media that as long as he stays in the law business, no journalist or media institution will go to court or be asked to pay damages because they report on corruption or speculate in their reportage.
Gongloe also used the occasion to urge officials of government to be transparent in their dealings so as to avoid public speculation.
Those honored along with Cllr. Gongloe are: Cllr Bobby Livingstone, Secretary LNBA; Cllr. Edwin Martins, County Attorney, Montserrado County; Judge Joseph Barcon of the Second Judicial Circuit Court, Grand Bassa County; Dr .Abraham Jawara, Chief Medical Officer, Grand Bassa County and Atty. Khalifa V. Sheriff.
