Liberia Celebrates Historic Victory At IMO Council Elections

The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) Board of Directors has officially congratulated the Government and people of Liberia following the country’s landmark success at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council elections.

LiMA Board Chair Tornorlah S. Varpilah lauded the collaborative efforts that made the achievement possible.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone for this historic achievement,” the statement said. “This victory highlights Liberia’s growing influence in the global maritime sector and underscores our commitment to advancing international maritime governance.

The Board specifically recognized the diplomatic efforts of several key officials for their leadership and engagement throughout the campaign, both in London and internationally:

H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ibrahim Nyei and Cllr. Jeddi M. Armah, Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador to the United Kingdom (unnamed in the original text), Ambassador Christopher Hayes Onanuga, Board Chairman of the Liberia Tourism Authority, for his strategic presence and support at IMO Headquarters during the elections.

Acknowledgement was also given to the LiMA and IMO representation team for their tireless work and professionalism:

Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe, Commissioner/CEO of LiMA, Hon. Robert Wilmont Kpadeh, and Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, LiMA technical staff, for their coordinated campaign efforts.

“This achievement reflects the strength of collaboration across our national institutions,” Mr. Varpilah added. “We are proud of the unified leadership demonstrated and remain committed to elevating Liberia’s profile and performance in global maritime affairs.”

The Board of Directors emphasized that Liberia’s victory represents a major milestone for the country’s maritime program, positioning the nation for increased engagement, responsibility, and influence within the IMO.
