The British Embassy near Monrovia has clarified that the UK government has not made any recent changes to the safety and security section of its travel advisory for Liberia, contrary to a recent media report.
The FrontPage Africa news outlet on its online version of May 5, 2019, reported that the British government had issued a travel alert warning its nationals to avoid venturing around protest sites, noting that terrorists are likely to carry out attacks in Liberia.
But a statement issued by the British embassy on Monday stated that the “last change to the (travel alert) section was done in November, 2018 which, it says, is consistent with their advice on other countries.
“The current advice is not linked to the planned protest on June 7, 2019; our travel advice remains constantly under review,” the statement noted, citing that ‘It reflects our assessment of the general threat level in the region.”
Meanwhile, British Ambassador David Belgrove has expressed his government’s commitment to help Liberia in the areas of media and human resource development, and information exchange.
Ambassador Belgrove made the assertion on Tuesday when he visited the Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) at his Capitol Hill office in Monrovia.
For his part, Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe extolled the British Ambassador for the visit and expressed the Liberian government’s gratitude for the many assistance from the government and people of Great Britain.
