As Liberia’s fifteen counties preparing to get in full gear for the holding of this year (2018) County Sports Meet; an annual sporting program to help promote the program, one of the participating teams, the Lofa County Team has been accused of recruiting Guineans with the reported intent to play for the County.

Making the disclosure today, March 28, 2018, state radio (ELBC) Correspondent in the county said this situation has created a serious concern amongst citizens of the county pondering over the action of the county authorities.

As part of its 100 days deliverables, the Ministry of Youth and Sports says all is now set for the commencement of the National County Sports Meet this Saturday, March 31 at four venues across Liberia under the theme: “Uniting Liberia after Elections.”

Preliminary rounds of the tournament will be played in Bong, Grand Bassa, Cape Mount and Sinoe counties, while the quarter and semifinals, comprising eight qualified teams, will move to Monrovia.

Unlike others, the Ministry said this year’s edition is going to be quite different from other editions with several innovative ideas and systems put in place.

At a joint press conference held recently by the ministries of Youth and Sports and Internal Affairs at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Complex, Andy Quamie, Deputy Minister for Sports, said a social corporate and welfare committee headed by First-lady Clar Weah will be set up during the knockout rounds in Monrovia. He said the committee will be responsible to distribute relief items in slum communities and hospitals in Monrovia on the Saturday before the grand final.

He said the initiative is part of the two ministries’ social and corporate responsibility and therefore it is worthwhile adding the initiative to this year’s edition of the sports festival.

“Welfare and corporate responsibilities are part of sports,” he said.

He also added that several measures have been put in place to ensure that stadium safety and security regulations are properly observed during the second round in Monrovia. He added that various technical committees have been set up and will eventually be disclosed to the public.

This year’s event is officially sponsored by Lonestar MTN. The official opening ceremonies take place in Gbarnga City, Bong County.

Liberia’s 15 counties have been divided into four groups for the event.

Group one pairs Bong, Lofa, Nimba and Grand Gedeh counties. Gbarnga, in Bong County, will serve as host for Group One.

Group two consists of Grand Bassa, River Cess, Montserrado and Margibi counties. They will play their games in Buchannan City, Grand Bassa.

In Group three, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu and Bomi counties will sort things out. Robertsports is the venue.

In group four, they are Sinoe, Grand Kru, Maryland and River Gee. Greenville will host them all.

Meanwhile, President George Manneh Weah, to be flanked by Youth and Sports Minister D. Zeogar Wilson, will take the official kick-off in Gbarnga, while the event goes on simultaneously in the rest of the counties. The events are expected to be attended by members of the 54th National Legislature, the Judiciary, cabinet ministers, and the general public, a press release issued said.
