The Government of the Republic of India has presented a grant valued at US$2 million to the Government and people of Liberia to finance the completion of the 14 Military Hospital Project, enunciated by President George Manneh Weah.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, the presentation of the symbolic cheque was followed by the signing of the grant on Tuesday, August13,in the Minister’s Conference Room at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia.
Liberia’s Foreign Minister Gbehzohngar Milton Findley signed on behalf of the government while the Ambassador of the Republic of India to Liberia, Sailas Thangal signed for his government.
Ambassador Thangal also has concurrent accreditations to Cote d’Ivoire and the Republic of Guinea.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Foreign Minister Findley, on behalf of President George Manneh Weah, and the people of Liberia, extended heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Indian Government and people for the grant.
Minister Findley stressed that the money will be used to facilitate the completion of some critical facilities at the 14 Military Hospitals currently under construction.
He also expressed Liberia’s deepest gratitude and appreciation to the Prime Minister and the Government of India for this laudable gesture, describing it as a remarkable assistance to Liberia.
The Dean of the Cabinet noted that Liberia and India continue to enjoy fruitful bilateral relations over the years with both sides renewing cooperation in other fields of diplomatic engagements.
The Liberian Foreign Minister used the occasion to remind Ambassador Thangal on his government’s commitment made to Liberia, regarding the provision of some 50 vehicles to help address Liberia’s logistical challenges.
For his part, Indian Ambassador Thangal said the US$2 million grant is part of India’s continual bilateral assistance to the Government of Liberia aimed at supporting its developmental drive in the framework of the existing bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Ambassador Thangal said the Indian Government is interested in seeing the 14 Military Hospital completed as soon as possible so as to ensure that personnel of the AFL and their families get improved health facilities to meet their health needs.
Commenting on the promise made by India regarding the 50 vehicles to Liberia, Ambassador Thangal disclosed that 45 busses and five fire trucks respectively will shortly be made available to the Government of Liberia to enhance the transport sector of the country.
In brief remarks at the ceremony, Defense Minister Daniel Zankahn assured the Indian Ambassador that the fund will be used wisely and for its intended purpose, adding that by October of this year, the 14 Military Hospital will be at an appreciable level of completion.
