In Bomi County: Woman Gave Birth By The Roadside Due To Lack Of Ambulance
TUBMANBURG (LINA) – A 32 year old woman (name withheld) was forced to gave birth along the road in the morning hours of Friday while en route to the Government Referral Hospital in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.
Family members told the Liberia News Agency (LINA) that the incident occurred after all efforts failed to get an ambulance to transport their relative to the hospital.
They told LINA that the family was informed by authorities at the hospital in Tubmanburg that the only functioning ambulance broke down few months ago.
While trying to make effort to reach the hospital, the family said, their relative could not continue the journey as her labor became intense and she subsequently gave birth to a male child.
The incident, according to the family, occurred close to the compound of the C.H. Dewey Central High School in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, which is about five minutes’ walk to the hospital.
The family explained that their daughter was assisted by a nurse from the Government Hospital who later arrived on the scene and attended to the new-born and his mother and took them to the hospital for additional care.
Meanwhile, Bomi County Health Administrator, Fallah Free, has confirmed to LINA that the county lacks ambulance; something he said has caused many to encounter difficulties while trying to get to the hospital for medical care.
“We as county health authorities have informed the Ministry of Health about many issues, including the lack of ambulance at the facility,” he told LINA.
It can be recalled that some months ago a resident of Steward Camp in Tubmanburg also gave birth by the roadside due to the delay in arrival of the functioning ambulance at the government hospital in the county.
