Monrovia, Liberia – A historic chapter in Liberia’s urban development is set to begin as officials from the Ministry of Public Works (MPW), the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), and the Liberia National Police (LNP) have completed a joint site tour ahead of the groundbreaking for the country’s first-ever overpass bridges.
The August 19, 2025, tour was a crucial step in preparing for the construction of two China-aided overpass bridges along the highly congested Tubman Boulevard. The project is a landmark effort to tackle Monrovia’s persistent traffic issues, improve safety, and enhance transportation efficiency on one of the capital’s busiest roads.
The tour brought together key stakeholders, including LNP Chief of Traffic Alphanso Bindah, who assured the public of the police’s commitment to managing traffic and ensuring safety throughout the construction period. “The Liberia National Police remains committed to working with the Ministry of Public Works and CRBC to guarantee smooth traffic flow and safety for both motorists and pedestrians during this important project,” Bindah stated.
The overpass bridges are expected to significantly reduce vehicular congestion at key intersections during peak hours and facilitate smoother movement across the capital.
CRBC, the project’s main contractor, is working closely with the MPW and the LNP to develop a comprehensive traffic management plan. The plan is designed not only to ensure road safety but also to protect local communities and minimize environmental disruption. According to CRBC officials, preparatory work, including geotechnical surveys and utility mapping, is already well underway.
Immanuel Freeman, Coordinator of the Special Project Implementation Team at the MPW, described the joint site tour as a reflection of the ministry’s proactive and collaborative approach. “This project is more than concrete and steel—it’s about moving Liberia forward,” Freeman said, adding that it signals the government’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure.
With the groundbreaking ceremony anticipated in the coming weeks, the project has generated considerable public excitement. The Tubman Boulevard overpasses are viewed as a symbol of progress and a significant leap forward in post-war Liberia’s infrastructure development. The MPW has pledged to maintain transparency and keep the public informed throughout the process, ensuring a smooth and successful implementation of this landmark endeavor.
