Grand Kru Police Investigate Three Murder Cases and Tackle Illegal Mining

By James Myking Suah

BARCLAYVILLE — The Grand Kru County detachment of the Liberia National Police (LNP) is currently investigating three murder cases that occurred in Jloh Nifa, Buah Geeken, and Wedabo Jlatun.

According to Clement Barlatt, Assistant Commissioner of Police and County Commander, one suspect from the Nifa Jloh area has already been formally charged and is awaiting prosecution.

In a recent press briefing, ACP Barlatt also provided an update on the police’s efforts to combat crime and illegal activities in the county. He reported successful raids on criminal hotspots, leading to the arrest of several drug traffickers—both Nigerian and Liberian nationals. The suspects were found in possession of “Kush,” marijuana, and other narcotic substances. These illicit drugs and the arrested individuals were transferred to the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) for further investigation and legal action. Barlatt noted that the LNP works closely with the LDEA, ensuring that all arrests and seized materials are properly handed over for due process.

Combating Illegal Mining and Child Labor

ACP Barlatt expressed growing concern over the rise in illicit mining activities in Grand Kru County. He revealed that the LNP is collaborating with relevant mining authorities to combat these illegal operations. He highlighted the troubling involvement of some local citizens, which he said poses significant risks to community safety and and security.

A major concern raised by Barlatt is the presence of underage children working in hazardous mining conditions. He emphasized that this practice not only endangers their health but also undermines their potential for future success. In response, the County Police Detachment plans to launch a joint campaign against child labor with the Ministry of Labor.

Barlatt warned that anyone found engaging in such practices would be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted. He cited recent incidents in August where children and citizens lost their lives due to safety violations in illegal mining operations.

He reiterated the LNP’s commitment to aggressively tackle illegal mining, describing it as “economic sabotage” that hinders the government’s ability to generate essential revenue for development projects and civil servant salaries.

In other news, Barlatt noted that recent enforcement of vehicle and traffic laws has resulted in significant revenue for the Liberia Revenue Authority, which he sees as a positive development for his leadership and the County Police Detachment.
