The Government of Liberia is appealing for unity within the National Legislature, emphasizing the critical need for lawmakers to transcend political divides and collaborate in the interest of national development.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism’s regular press briefing on Thursday, April 24, 2025, Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah voiced the government’s concern regarding the ongoing discord within the Legislature.
He underscored that while the three branches of government operate independently, they share a collective responsibility to serve the Liberian populace.
“The Government is seriously concerned about the current disagreement within the Legislature,” stated Minister Piah. “Though the three branches of government operate independently, they are all accountable to the people of Liberia. We believe collaboration and unity are key to moving the country forward.”
Minister Piah urged lawmakers to prioritize national interest over personal and political ambitions and to align with the ARREST Agenda, a government initiative focused on Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism.
“We want lawmakers to put aside their differences and put Liberia first,” he implored. “The rule of law remains a cornerstone of this government’s priorities, and we call for all hands on deck in ensuring peace, progress, and prosperity for our people.”
The Information Minister also reaffirmed the Boakai administration’s dedication to good governance and inclusive national development. He called on members of the House of Representatives to heed the recent Supreme Court ruling on the leadership crisis within the Legislature and to utilize it as a foundation to restore order and responsible governance.
“This internal dispute has the potential to undermine the progress we are making in national development and governance,” Minister Piah cautioned, expressing apprehension about the prolonged impasse’s impact on Liberia’s democratic institutions and development objectives.
He acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue, including engagement with the Traditional Council and other stakeholders, to foster consensus and a political resolution.
Minister Piah encouraged legislators to recommit to their constitutional duties and commended those who have already returned to their roles. He also appealed to traditional leaders and religious institutions to intervene and assist in mediating the crisis.
“The road to national recovery requires all hands on deck,” he asserted. “Their constitutional oath demands service above self.”
The government, he concluded, remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that all sectors operate under the rule of law and in accordance with the Constitution of Liberia.
