Two teams of neurosurgeons from California, USA and Canada are expected to arrive in the country shortly to provide varieties of neurosurgical services to Liberians at the Jackson F. Doe (JFD) Medical Center in Tappita, Nimba County, Dr Saygbe Vanyanbah, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of JFD, has disclosed.
Making the disclosure at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing on Thursday, Dr Vanyanbah said the teams comprise almost 20 neurosurgical doctors and nurses and is coming as guests of JFD Medical Center.
According to Dr Vanyanbah, the teams are being sponsored by the Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation, a charity organization that has a global outreach in West Africa, and is expected in the country on November 4 to spend three weeks proving neurosurgical services to Liberians.
He pointed out that Dr. Alvin Nah Doe, who is the only neurosurgeon in Liberia, will be the lead doctor for the teams.
For his part, Dr Nah Doe disclosed that the neurosurgical services that the team will be providing will be at little or no cost to beneficiaries.
He said pre-screening for the surgeries is in progress and noted that the process is open to all Liberians.
He said the actual surgical operation is going to be done free, but noted that patients will be required to pay a minimal fee for computerized tomography (CT) scan that will be done on the various parts of their bodies that have the ailment.
Dr. Doe noted that the fees attached will not deprive any Liberian of the service, adding, “If you don’t have money you should still come and we will do the CT scan and surgery free of charge.”
Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concern with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system..
