(LINA) – European Union (EU) Ambassador to Liberia, Henele Cave, has disclosed that the Union provided the General Auditing Commission(GAC) a special allotment of three million Euros in addition to technical assistance.
Ambassador Cave stated that the EU’s support is intended to strengthen and improve the relationship of GAC with its main stakeholders such as the Legislature and other integrity institutions.
The EU Ambassador made the disclosure Thursday at the first GAC Forum for all government ministries and agencies held in Monrovia.
She indicated that the EU has been supporting the GAC since 2008 because it believes that external audit is essential to demonstrate the way towards accountability and transparency in the use of public resources.
She explained that the EU has gradually upgraded the type of support provided over the years, noting that the Union is assisting the GAC in becoming a modern credible and independent supreme audit institution.
Ambassador Cave stressed that timeliness and quality are essential in ensuring the impact on government’s public financial management, which means that government should also present budget execution reports and financial statements in a timely manner.
In remarks, Auditor General Yusador S. Gaye stressed the need for government functionaries to comply with the auditing system in the country.
Madam Gaye stated that public funds should be used wisely to transform the living condition of the Liberian people.
She pointed out that if Liberia’s resources are managed well, it will enhance the growth and development of the nation and its people.
The forum was held on the theme: “Enhancing Government’s Development Agenda by promoting accountability and transparency in the use of public resources.”
