EU-Funded Workshop To Help Strengthen Liberia’s Forestry Sector

In an effort to strengthen the country’s forestry sector, the National Union of Community Development Committee (NUCDC) with support from the European Union (EU) through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has conducted a three-day financial and project management training in Gbarnga, Bong County.

Speaking at the opening of the training Thursday, the president of the union, Mr. Andrew Zeleman, said the training seeks to educate participants on the importance of financial and project management at the community level.

The training, he stated, was triggered by a survey conducted by the group which established that majority of members of the Community Forestry Development Committee do not understand financial management.

The training is being held under the theme: “Strengthening Community Capacity to Monitor Benefits from Commercial Logging In Liberia”.

The meeting, which brought together over 150 participants from across the country, ended on Saturday, January 19.

It can be recalled that members of the National Union of Community Development Committee converged in Gbarnga City, Bong County in 2018 to design strategies to enhance productivity to benefit communities where logging activities are ongoing.

During the 2018 meeting, a new corps of officers of the union was elected, including president, vice president and financial officer to steer the affairs of the union for three years.
