Electoral tension in the southeastern part of Liberia, Grand Kru County has led to the damaging of a local police Nissan Patrol Jeep by angry supporters believed to be one of the senatorial candidates, Numene Bartkwa, who report said have earlier threatened to burn down the local office of the National Elections Commission (NEC).
According to our reporter, the angry supporters mainly young people had earlier planned to do more damages in the County if it had not been for quick intervention of the joint security in the county the situation would have degenerated into full scale political upheaval.
One of the victims, a local journalist, Chris Kumeh speaking to the GNN, said he was humiliated by supporters of Numene Bartekwa after prevented him from doing live video of the incident at the NEC local office demanding results of the election, while threatening to resist any attempt to manipulate the results.
Explaining his ordeal to our reporter, Kumeh said the angry crowd believed to be supporters of senatorial candidate of Bartekwa had accused him of being sent by Senator Peter Coleman and his supporters to video recordings during the disturbances, noting it was unacceptable and unwarranted act on the part of Bartekwa’s supporters to have attacked the local office of NEC.
Explaining further, journalist Kumeh he is experiencing bodily pain from the flogging he received from the angry supporters of candidate Bartekwa, and has meanwhile called on the Press Union of Liberia Grand Kru Chapter to swiftly intervene into this situation.
