Amid ongoing challenges that continue to impede efficient poultry production in Liberia, the Executive Chairman of Eastern Farmers Agriculture and General Enterprise-Sierra Leone (EFAGE-SL), Sahr Lahai Jusu, has unveiled plans to establish a One-Stop Shop for poultry feed. This initiative aims to reduce the cost of feed, ensure its sustainable availability, and boost productivity in the sector.
In a recent visit to Liberia, Jusu, accompanied by Mr. Samuel Heloo, Regional Technical Sales Advisor for Trouw Nutrition/Hendrix for the Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, along with Max Kyne, engaged with local stakeholders, conducted marketing activities, and explored a sales outlet for EFAGE-SL poultry products in the country. The team identified the challenges related to feed availability poultry feed and observed the farming practices of local poultry farmers.
The delegation visited several poultry farms, including Pantten Farm, owned by Hawa Willeh, which houses 908 layer birds; American Poultry, located along the Bomi County highway; Eggland Poultry, which has over 500 layer birds; AB Goodridge Integrated Poultry Farm with 350 broilers; and Morningstar Poultry Farm with 450 layer birds, among others.
Data gathered during the visit revealed that many poultry farmers in Liberia have suffered significant losses due to the unavailability of standard feeds for their layer birds.
Hawa Willeh, the owner of Pantten Farm, shared how she lost 9,000 birds in 2024 due to feed shortages. She explained that her maize, primarily imported from Guinea, was delayed in transit for a month, severely impacting the birds. She had to dispose of the affected birds before they reached their expected lifespan.
Similarly, Eggland Poultry, with 500 layer birds aged 18 weeks, are yet to start laying due to significant weight lost among the birds.
On Friday, March 14, 2025, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Agriculture, held a joint meeting in Monrovia with the EFAGE-SL team, the Poultry Farmers Association of Liberia (POFAL), and POFAL Consultants, Agro Tech International. The government expressed appreciation for the proposed extension of high-performing and quality poultry feed to Liberia.
The meeting, chaired by Dr. Garmie Voupawoe, Director of Animal Resources and Chief Veterinary Officer, was attended by 25 poultry farmers, government officials, and consultants. During the meeting, Dr. Voupawoe acknowledged that feed shortages were the biggest challenge facing poultry farmers in Liberia and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting efforts to reduce the country’s reliance on imported poultry products.
Dr. Voupawoe noted, “Many farms have closed down because of feed shortages, but we are committed to strengthening food security and ensuring the production of hygienic, tasty, and nourishing local eggs as part of the government’s food security program.”
On his part, EFAGE Executive Chairman, Sahr Lahai Jusu revealed that EFAGE-SL’s Feed Mill Plant has the capacity to produce over 250,000 50-kg bags of various types of high-quality feed.
