Dr. Ibn Chambas Pays Courtesy Visit On House Speaker Chambers, Held Talks Concerning Governance, Peace, Security, amongst others

The Special Representative and Head of United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) and the Sahel, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas accompanied by the Resident Coordinator of the UN-Mission in Liberia Yacoub El Hillo  today, November 8, 2018 paid a courtesy visit to the Office of the Speaker of the 54^th Legislature, Dr. Bhofal Chambers.

The UN-Diplomat and the high ranking Liberian Legislative Statesman held talks surrounding good governance, rule of law, peace amongst others, as a pinnacle to keeping Liberia on the pedestal and the trajectory to becoming a prosperous and a stable nation in the sub region.

The UN envoy told Speaker Chambers that the United Nations is pleased with the level of governance so far in the country, reminding the Speaker that Liberia remains a peace keeping success story in the sub region.

The UN-Envoy, Dr. Chambas further asserted that the Secretary General of the United Nations, Amb. Antonio Guterres has also extended his greetings and felicitations to the government and people of Liberia, encouraging them to keep the peace and stability for the forward match of the country.

Dr. Chambas says the United Nations take cognizance of recent legislative efforts by the 54^th legislature on the passage of the Land Rights Bill, describing it as positive venture and hopes its impact the country positively.  He used the occasion to call on the Liberia Government to encourage gender balance in the body politics of Liberia, where women are given the platform to get involved through participation and attaining political positions and victory.

For his part, House Speaker, Dr. Bhofal Chambers says he sees the United Nations as one of Liberia’s most significant partners counting back more than 50-years ago, when Liberia join few other countries in the world in signing the chatter of the United Nations and then years of Liberia’s civil upheaval in which the UN plays a very important role to restoring peace, stability and on-going development efforts.

Torching on the rule of law and the justice system of the country, Speaker Chambers says Liberia remains a respecter of its laws and will do nothing outside the ambit of its Jurisprudence. Chambers mentioned that recent development in the country on account of the impeachment proceeding against one of the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Cllr. Kabineh Janeh is guided by legitimate legislative exercise under the laws of Liberia.

Commenting Further, Speaker Chambers says other topical political developments in the public and before the Legislature is President Weah bill to cancel several tenure positions in the executive. The Speaker told the visiting UN diplomats that the Legislature will work with the executive branch of government de-tenurize some positions in the executive where it is needless.
