Cyril Allen’s ‘Country-Congau’ Politics: A Deception or Pure Sycophancy?

In a shocking radio interview on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020 on OK FM 99.5, the chairman emeritus of the former ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP) and current chair of the governing council of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Cyril Allen ‘shamelessly’ said “the newly formed Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) leaders will not be accepted by the general populace because of their Americo-Liberian biological connection.”
The CPP comprises four political parties – Alternative National Congress (ANC), All Liberian Party (ALP), Liberty Party (LP) and former governing Unity Party (UP). Liberia was founded by free slaves from the Americas, who became known as ‘congaus’ or ‘Americo-Liberians’ following scuffles with natives on the Green coast in West Africa that later became Republic of Liberia following independence. The free slaves were descendants of slaves sold to American slave traders by tribal chiefs of their time from the Congo Basin and other parts of continent and were taken to plantations in the Americas.
Upon their return to the continent at the behest of the American Colonization Society (ACS), Liberia was established as the free slaves settled and governed for 122 years before a bloody coup led by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe ended their one-party state rule. The military government soon took over state power but the very corruption allegation against the True Whip Party government of President William R. Tolbert that prompted the coup became worse than one could imagine.
In 1990, a civil war was launched by ‘Americo-Liberian’ Charles Taylor, and after years of fighting, that also included other warring factions, Taylor was elected president in 1997 and governed with iron hand, thus making those he perceived as his enemies to flee into exile. Fast forward to 1999, a rebellion was launched against Taylor’s administration by two groups of exile Liberians, known as Liberia United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) and Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL), who accused Taylor of human rights violations and corruption.
Cyril Allen, who Tuesday said that the newly formed Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) leaders will not be accepted by the general populace because of their Americo-Liberian biological connection,” was a close associate of Taylor, who from 1990 to 2003 allegedly pillaged Liberia’s resources to the detriment of the very Liberians whose interest he is sycophantically trying to protect today, because he now finds himself at the helm of the current Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government – that comprises George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Party (NPP) and former House Speaker Alex Tyler’s Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP).
Is Allen being deceptive or just being a sycophant, because the current CDC administration consists of several top advisors to President George Weah, who all have ‘Americo-Liberian’ or ‘congau’ lineages, including top economic advisors, Charles Bright, Emmanuel Shaw and legal advisor Archibald Bernard. How can Allen say Liberians will not accept another government who leaders have ‘American-Liberian’ biological connection, when the very current government that he serves as head of the Governing Council of the Coalition for Democratic Change, and also as Board Chair of the National Social Security Welfare Corporation, have most of its top advisors who have ‘America-Liberian’ biological connection? This is pure deception and sycophantic on his part and another attempt to brush aside the hard reality Liberians are confronting daily to better their lives under a government that he serves..
Allen’s statement has received huge reactions, many of whom who condemned it during a phone call in on a radio local talk show, noting that his utterances are indeed divisive, and intended to plunge Liberia to quagmire of the past.
