Diplomatic and consular services at the Israeli embassy which services Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone have come to a standstill.
According to reports monitored by African Star, an on-going budgetary spat between the Israeli Foreign and Finance Ministries led to the closure of embassy activities which have affected the three West African countries.
The Israeli embassy in Ghana issued a statement on Thursday in which it said, “…affected all services including consular services, meetings and events.”
The embassy further explained in its statement that, “Due to the decision of the Israeli Ministry of Finance to breach understandings that were agreed upon and signed by the Director-General of the Ministry of Finance on July 21, 2019, and to apply a one-sided procedure that alters a protocol that has been in place for several decades, we are forced to close the diplomatic mission. No consular services will be provided and no one will be allowed to enter the Embassy,”
Ambassador Shani Cooper who is resident in Accra, Ghana is also accredited to Liberia and neighboring Sierra Leone.
Meantime, the Israeli embassy says once its internal issues are resolved, it will resume diplomatic activities.
