Monrovia, May 11, 2019 – At the close of the recent Conference of West African Laboratory Scientists organized by Africabio Enterprises, the award-winning Liberian scientists and inventor, Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan conducted workshops and lecture on molecular techniques of diagnosing infectious diseases at National Reference Laboratory of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) in Charlesville, Margibi County.
The “workshops were conduct as part of my voluntary mission to transfer expert-knowledge and skills to colleagues, the young laboratory personnel and the available technical capacity in the country,” said Dr. Nyan
During the workshops, exercises specifically focused on the biomolecular detection of Hepatitis B and C, using techniques that can also be applied to detecting other infections in the region including Malaria, Typhoid, Ebola and Yellow fever, added Dr. Nyan.
Dr. Nyan is globally credited as inventor of the Rapid Multiplex Infections Diagnostic Test that can detect many infections at the same time in less than an hour. The “Nyan-Test,” which can detect HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis viruses, Dengue, Ebola, and other infections, was recently awarded a US Patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The workshop was organized by Dr. Fatoma Bolay, Director of the Liberia Institute for Biomedical Research (LIBR) which houses the National Reference Laboratory of Liberia (NRL). Both Dr. Bolay and Mr. John Dogba thanked Dr. Nyan for his selfless contribution to the Institute’s path of acquiring some specialized diagnostic techniques and skills.
On his part, Dr. Mosoka Fallah, Deputy Director of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia, commended Dr. Nyan and proposed a collaboration between Shufflex Biomed and the NPHIL-LIBR.
In acknowledgement, Dr. Nyan emphasized that, “through collaborations we are sure that the Liberian public health and biomedical institutions will effectively benefit from diaspora expert knowledge in the science, medicine and technology. The government has to prioritize and support these areas with enough financial resources.”
Dr. Nyan also gave a lecture in molecular Microbiology at the Mother Patten College of Health Sciences of the Stella Maris Polytechnic University in Monrovia. Students and faculty expressed appreciation for the free lecture and services. The lecture also focused on fundamental molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases.
At the Cuttington University in Suakoko, Bong County, where Dr. Nyan also gave a lecture on science and innovation in society, students and faculty staff of the university lauded the award-wining Liberian scientist for his time. Dr. Patrick Carl Burrowes, Vice President for Academic Affairs said that, “we are grateful that Dr. Nyan made it to Cuttington University at a very short notice and for the inspirational lecture he gave.”
Here at Cuttington University, we are developing programs that are geared towards strengthening research culture in the liberal arts and the natural sciences and we look forward to Dr. Nyan playing an important role, Dr. Burrowes concluded.
