As Liberians in their number craving for the establishment of economic and war crimes court in Liberia, one of those always in the center of controversial for his alleged melting of conflicts and other undesirable situations, the youthful City Mayor of Monrovia, Jefferson Koijee to the surprise of many is calling for the establishment of the court in the country for those alleged of committing heinous crimes to have their days in court for their actions.
Mayor Koijee who is currently the chairman of the Revolutionary National Youth League of the CDC was one of the vocal persons in the CDC calling for the establishment of the war and economic crimes court in the country for those alleged of committing heinous crimes to have their days in court for their actions.
Besides, the CDC of former soccer legend, now President of Liberia supported the establishment of the court while in opposition, but has since gone in coma after taking state power in 2018 after several Liberians at home and abroad mounting pressure for the George Weah led government to ensure the establishment of the court.
Collectively, the CDC has reportedly reneged on the calls of the Liberian people for the establishment of war and economic crimes, with some pundits saying the CDC government is trying to shield former rebel leader of the defunct Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL) and now Nimba County Senator Prince Yormie Johnson who is listed for prosecution for allegedly committing crimes against humanity during the brutal Liberian civil war.
The Nimba County senator supported the CDC of President George Weah during the runoff elections in 2017 that brought the CDC to power.
But speaking during a major press conference Thursday at the Monrovia City Hall, Mayor Koijee recounted his (Koijee) advocacy for the establishment of war and economic crimes court while in opposition.
The young mayor was responding to allegations that he participated in the Liberian civil war, allegation the mayor said is false and misleading. He wants the state security apparatuses to investigate him whether he has associated or participated in the civil war as alleged.
According to him, he has never associated himself with warring factions in his life. He said their political engagements shouldn’t be misconstrued as people who associated themselves with war mongers or “murderers”.
“I don’t believe that impunity should have a place in our country. But yes, he’s the president who presides and if I have an opportunity to talk to the president, I will say to him clearly that I support the war crimes court because we need to be very clear,” Mayor Koijee said.
The CDC Youth League chairman further said “We cannot afford to slip back to the old history of the country. We are not prepared for that. Being a mayor cannot change us. We still stand on our ground. At the appropriate time and in the wisdom of our president, he will ensure that the war and economic crimes court is establish in this country. “
“For the sake of the record, I do support the establishment of the war crimes court,” Mayor Koijee said.
