A nine-year-old child is among five Britons being treated for coronavirus in France, authorities confirmed.

Two schools, where the child is believed to have spent time, have been temporarily closed near the ski resort where the child was staying.

The child – who has not been identified – is believed to have been infected by a middle-aged British relative who caught the virus at a business conference in Singapore.

The relative met other family members in Contamines-Montjoie, in the French Alps, on January 24 for four days before travelling back to the UK.

The group of 11 includes a nine-year-old child who recently spent time in a school in Contamines – a mountain village of which he was a also resident – as well as in another establishment where he attended French lessons, regional health official Jean-Yves Grall told a televised news conference.

There were three children in all among the group of 11, and one has contracted the virus, Grall said.

It was not immediately clear whether the nine-year-old in question had tested positive.
