NATIONAL ARCHIVES CONDUCTS MAJOR PUBLIC EXHIBITION IN BUCHANAN, GRAND BASSA AHEAD OF WORLD ARCHIVES DAY, SHOWCASING LIBERIA’S HISTORICAL RECORDS

Buchanan: The Center for National Documents and Records Agency (CNDRA) hosted a landmark, free public exhibition at the Buchanan City Hall on Thursday, June 11, 2026, in commemoration of the 78th International Archives Day. This initiative directly follows a recent proclamation by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who officially declared June 9, 2026, as International Archives Day, establishing it as a national working holiday.

The exhibition successfully gathered local stakeholders, students, researchers, government institutions, civil society organizations, and various development partners. Highlighting the event was the active participation of over one hundred students representing several prominent local institutions, including the Drims School System, Saint Peter Claver Catholic School, the Bassa High School System, and the Divine Grace School System.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to view invaluable pieces of the nation’s past, including the original Commonwealth flag, Liberia’s founding flag, and rare images spanning both the pre-colonial and colonial eras. The historical displays specifically highlighted the founding of Liberia, archival images of Edina, Bassa Cove, and wider Grand Bassa County, alongside remarkable photographs captured during the historic 1926 expedition.

Jeremiah Willie, the director of the Archival Section and head of the National Archives Exhibition, emphasized that the initiative was designed to bring Grand Bassa County’s rich historical records directly to its people. He noted that showcasing critical artifacts, such as the country’s 1847 Constitution and the original Declaration of Independence, underscores the vital importance of preserving Liberia’s documentary heritage for generations to come.

Willie further explained that the national archives serve as a dynamic infrastructure for society. He outlined how archival preservation directly supports justice and accountability through the rule of law and transitional justice, fosters historical memory by recognizing human dignity, promotes inclusion through public access and community empowerment, and secures future justice by protecting rights and responsibilities.

The official national celebration is scheduled to take place in Buchanan on Friday, June 12, 2026. The events will align with the global theme, “Archives for Justice, Rights, Memory, and Futures,” alongside the tailored national theme, “Liberia’s Records, Our Rights, Our Future.”
