Liberia Launches Health Intervention for Inmates in Barclayville Prison

Barclayville, Grand Kru County – May 20, 2025 – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health, has initiated an urgent health intervention aimed at over thirty inmates currently held at the Barclayville withholding cell in Grand Kru County. This crucial initiative seeks to enhance medical care and address the escalating health concerns within the correctional facility.
This action follows the recent delivery of a substantial consignment of medical supplies from the national government, facilitated by the local Ministry of Health. Prison officials warmly welcomed the supplies, emphasizing their timely arrival.
Superintendent Moses Allison of the Grand Kru County Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation expressed his profound gratitude to the Government of Liberia and its partners, hailing the move as a vital step in tackling the long-neglected healthcare needs of inmates. “This support from the government is commendable, especially as we continue to grapple with various challenges in maintaining the health and well-being of our inmates,” Superintendent Allison stated. “The medical supplies will significantly assist us in providing necessary treatment and improving the overall health conditions within the prison.”
Superintendent Allison further highlighted that this initiative comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding subpar health standards in correctional facilities across Liberia. He pointed out that inmates in Barclayville are often held in overcrowded conditions, which exacerbates the spread of communicable diseases and leaves chronic illnesses untreated.
Health authorities are slated to collaborate closely with prison staff to ensure the efficient utilization of the medical resources. The intervention will encompass comprehensive health screenings, treatment for prevalent illnesses, and educational sessions focused on personal hygiene and disease prevention.
“I think this is just the beginning of what our office hopes will be an ongoing effort to safeguard the health of all inmates within our correctional facilities,” Allison added, signaling a sustained commitment.
The government’s latest effort underscores a renewed dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of inmates by addressing systemic healthcare disparities within the prison system. It also reflects a broader national agenda to improve prison conditions and protect public health across all sectors of society.
