PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) — Eighty-three nationalities including Liberians who have been craving to becoming American citizens over the years were on Friday morning, May 25, 2019 cheerful when they were announced citizens of the United States citizens
The newly commissioned American came from various countries, including the Philippines, Honduras, Liberia and India gathered at the Pensacola City Hall taken the Oath of Allegiance and became American citizens.
One of those who were opportune to be amongst those commissioned were Mark and Eunice Dahnn who years ago started their journey to America from Liberia during the Civil War in their homeland.
During that time, their car was taken; they were threatened at gunpoint, exiled and separated for a time, noting that, “Our journey has been a very long one. We have come a very long way,” said Eunice Dahn after she and her husband received their citizenship on Friday morning.
“It’s a blessing even today – we share the joy of being part of this country. A blessing to be transitioning into a life where you can even help your people,” said Mark Dahn.
The two are now working to help the people in their homeland of Liberia. They have started the Light Evangelism Ministry and have opened up a hospital, high school and are building a church. They say this is all thanks to the grace of God and the kindness of the American people to help them when they first got here as strangers.
Mayor Grover Robinson welcomed the new citizens.
“We welcome anyone to be here. It doesn’t matter when you get here, we just want you here. We’re glad you’re a part of this city, this community,” said Mayor Robinson.
He said we all came from somewhere else to be here,
“The group symbolizes who we are as the United States. We are not bound by a common ethnicity, background language,” he told the crowd.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services says they naturalize about 700,000 to 750,000 citizens each year.
