Despite of it supposed called off by the government of Liberia, and the immediate arrival of officials of the international community, especially the head of ECOWAS leadership to intervene on this issue, their visit to Liberia has given ‘Green Light’ to the head of the protestors, the Council of Patriots, but urged them that it will be peaceful.
During the ‘Unification Day’ meeting held in Monrovia last week the Liberian Government’s expectation was for the organizers (The Council of Patriots) to put forward their demands in order for the June 7th protest to be halted, unfortunately, this not take place, but rather the mediators (ECOWAS and others) granted that the protest be held as scheduled and further urged the organizers that the quest to protest will be peaceful.
Earlier, it was rumored that the protest had being called off as a result of the intervention of the visiting ECOWAS team to Liberia last week, but this rumor has being put to rest with the visiting team noting that it is the right of Liberians, according to the constitution to protest once that call will be peaceful, and will be in the interest of all Liberians.
Dozens of callers on local radio stations have welcomed the decision of ECOWAS and other international community including the United Nations to allow the protest to take place as scheduled and called for it to be peaceful.
The callers also prayed that unscrupulous individuals will not use that protest to cause havoc amongst innocent citizens in order to disrupt the exercise, and further agreed that drones be used to detect any other foul play during the protest.
In a related development, President George Manneh Weah has reiterated his commitment to the protection of Liberia’s peace and security and for all citizens irrespective of their ethnicity, political and social backgrounds.
The Liberian Leader said it is his constitutional and moral obligation to ensure that all Liberians are treated equally in an enabling and peaceful environment.
Meeting the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Dr. Weah said he is open to do whatever it takes to better the lives of his people.
This, he said, entails remaining engaged with every stakeholder who has an idea for the development, peace and harmony of Liberia.
The President met Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas behind closed doors on Friday, May 24, 2019 at the President’s Foreign Affairs Office.
Dr. Chambas commended the Liberian Leader for his enviable leadership and urged him to continue to pursue dialogue for the good of the country.
He promised to work with President Weah in the achievement of peace and development of Liberia.
