A young Liberian female journalist and rights activist, Ms. Martha Jlateh whose said her grand father was beating to death after they were accused by traditional elders in Grand Kru County, northeastern Liberia has disclosed that her life is being threatened, a situation she said compelled her to flee from her home country to Canada.
Explaining her ordeal, the young Liberian rights advocate said, her grand father were beating to death right before her eyes during in Liberia because they were accused of being witchcraft , noting, , “My entire family feared for our life and my dad later moved back . I grew up as a broadcast journalist , I started to use my platform working for a local radio station to explain my story. those same elders saw it as going against them . Several times they threatened my dad to turn me over and he didn’t. In 2015 he was also beaten to death, he fake his death and he was left to die,” Ms. Jlateh in tears told our staff.
Explaining further she said her dad was taken to the hospital and died as a result of the beaten, adding, “My sister was adapted and I was on a regular basis received countless number of threats from the elders, stressing that I exposed them,” She said.
She further recounted that these very people took away several lives; families are separated and lived in fear, “It is common in Liberia for people to killed with impunity. I am joining other Liberians to call for the establishment of war and economic crime court in Liberia so that people who were hurt and killed will be able to get justice. For those who did the killing are moving around freely with impunity. Liberians are living in fear in their own country with them,” Ms. Jlateh speaking about her plight concluded.
My grandfather was beaten and killed right before my eyes by traditional elders .he was accused of being a witchcraft and every year they posted a list of people accuse of witchcraft. My entire family for our life and my dad later moved back . so I grew up, being a broadcast journalist , I started to use my platform to the my story .the same elders saw it as going against them .Several times they threatened my dad to turn me over and he didn’t. In 2015 he was beaten and left for death. he fake his death and he was left to die.
My dad was taken to the hospital and died a painful death .my sister was adapted and I am living in fear I have received death threats that I expose them.
All these killers are known as good people because they are traditional elders .They took away so many lives . Families are separated and lived in fear .Because it’s common in Liberia for people to killed with no impunity. We want war and economic crime court so people who hurt and killed people walk around with impunity.
Liberians are living in fear of their lives because perpetrators lives in the same community as victims and are government official. Our government has failed us.
For advocacy over the years, calling for the establishment of war crimes court, and preaching for human rights, Ms. Jlateh has always been the target in her community, a situation that compelled her to leave Liberia seeking greener pasture abroad.
