MONROVIA — The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) will celebrate its 62nd anniversary on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, with a series of commemorative activities in Monrovia under the theme, “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development.”
According to the PUL, the celebration will gather journalists, media practitioners, students, government officials, civil society organizations, diplomats, and other key stakeholders for a grand parade, indoor ceremony, panel discussion, and anniversary reception.
Ms. Georgia Wallen, Country Manager of the World Bank Group in Liberia, will deliver the keynote address during the indoor program. Her address will be followed by a panel discussion examining the essential role of independent media in advancing democracy, public accountability, and sustainable development across Liberia.
The panel features Cllr. Medina Wesseh, Senior Counsel at the International Law Group, alongside Mr. Lahoucine Rahmouni, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to Liberia. Together, the panelists will address the critical challenges confronting Liberia’s media sector while highlighting the broader contributions of journalism to good governance and national development. Representatives from government agencies, civil society, and academic institutions are also scheduled to deliver solidarity remarks.
Anniversary events will begin with the arrival of participants at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill Campus between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. A grand parade will depart the campus at 9:00 a.m. and proceed along Capitol Hill to the Clar Marie Weah Events Hall at the Center for National Documents and Records Agency (National Archives) on 12th Street, Sinkor.
The formal indoor ceremony will take place at the venue from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., concluding with a celebratory reception at PUL headquarters on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor, from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Ahead of Wednesday’s festivities, the PUL welcomed BBC journalist Jacob Evans on Monday, September 28. Evans arrived in Liberia leading a delegation from Mary’s Meals International to produce a documentary commemorating the humanitarian organization’s 20th anniversary in the country. The visiting delegation also includes Alex Keay, Director of Partnerships, and Paloma Garcia Ovejero, Head of Media and Editorial.
Welcoming the delegation, PUL President Julius Kanubah noted that the engagement underlines the vital partnership between journalism and humanitarian initiatives in promoting human development, setting a meaningful tone as the Union marks 62 years of service to Liberia’s media community.
