WAFU U-20: Host Liberia tumble in opener

CAF: April 26, 2018 – Host Liberia suffered a 3-0 loss to Cote d’Ivoire in the opening match of the WAFU ‘A’ -20 tournament on Tuesday, 24 April 2018, in Monrovia.

With Liberia President George Weah among the guests at the Samuel Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Diabate Yalatie scored twice in the second half whilst Tabi Willy Bartiono put the icing on the cake with the third three minutes from time to seal victory for the Ivorians in the Group A fixture.

In the other Group A match, ten-man Sierra Leone beat Guinea Bissau 2-1. Alusine Koromah abd Rodney Michael each scored in the first half whilst Luciano Landia netted a consolation for Guinea Bissau on 75 minutes. Balie Kamara of Sierra Leone was sent off early in the second half.

In Group B on Wednesday, Mali beat Senegal 3-1 with a brace from Lassana Ndiaye and one from Hadji Drame enough for the former. Amadou Sagna reduced the deficit for Senegal on 77 minutes.

The other match saw Gambia and Guinea play to a 1-1 draw. Foday Vebe gave Guinea the lead on 26 minutes whilst Adama Jammeh levelled for Gambia five minutes later.

The competition continues on Thursday with host Liberia facing Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone against Cote d’Ivoire.
