An art teacher from the US state of Missouri has been arrested for allegedly poisoning her husband by spiking his smoothies with a toxic plant. Sarah Scheffer, 37, has been taken into custody on charges of attempted murder, according to a report by The Independent.

Earlier this week, Scheffer’s husband experienced a series of unexplained illnesses which he reported to the police.

According to The Independent, he recounted eight separate occasions where he consumed food or drinks prepared by his wife that had a strange taste and later caused him severe symptoms including fatigue, confusion, and nausea.

On January 1, after being served another peculiar-tasting drink, he confronted Scheffer. She initially claimed to have urinated in his beverage and later confessed to adding an industrial adhesive, though she eventually retracted this statement, The Independent reported.

Taking matters into his own hands, the husband installed a hidden camera which caught Scheffer in the act of preparing a smoothie and adding a root from a bag labelled “lily of the valley,” a plant he recognised from their home.

Upon her arrest, Scheffer told the police that she had indeed been adding substances like Lily of The Valley to her husband’s food, knowing full well the potential for illness or even death, as per the report.
