Urgent Call for an Independent Investigation into Recent Actions of the Armed Forces of Liberia and the Liberia National Police

Mr. President,  it’s of deep disquiet that the recent actions of members of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) and the Liberia National Police (LNP), which have been described as unprofessional, excessive, and contrary to the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. These incidents have raised serious concerns among citizens and stakeholders regarding the conduct of our security forces and their adherence to established protocols and ethical standards.

Given the gravity of these allegations, I respectfully urge your esteemed office to immediately commission a Special Independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate these events. As a precedent, I reference the bold decision taken by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf following the tragic November 7, 2011, shooting incident in Monrovia, where a special committee comprising eminent Liberians—including Sister Mary Laurene Browne—was tasked with examining the circumstances and providing recommendations based on their findings.

In addition to establishing an independent investigative body, I further urge the creation of an independent review panel to assess the commission’s report. Such an approach will not only demonstrate a commitment to justice but will also restore public confidence in our security institutions.

Furthermore, I encourage Your Excellency to muster the courage to fully implement the findings and recommendations of the investigative committee once its work is completed. The credibility of this process will be determined by the extent to which the government takes decisive action to hold those responsible accountable and implements necessary reforms to prevent future occurrences.

Liberia’s security forces must be seen as protectors of the people, not perpetrators of fear. Upholding transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the AFL and LNP is crucial for maintaining peace, stability, and public trust in the government.

Until then, I am looking forward to seeing your action, as soon as possible.

In-Peace
