UL, LWSC Partner To Renovate University Bathrooms

By Amos Harris

The University of Liberia (UL) and the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) have formed a partnership to overhaul bathroom facilities at UL’s Capitol Hill, Fendall, and Health Sciences campuses.

The initiative was finalized on Tuesday during a meeting between UL President Dr. Layli Maparyan and LWSC Managing Director Hon. Mo Ali, who was joined by Patrick Sandikie, LWSC’s Deputy Director for Technical Services.

At the meeting, Ali presented a water and sanitation assessment report for the Capitol Hill and Fendall campuses, noting that a similar study was still in progress at the Health Sciences campus.

“LWSC is well-positioned to collaborate with UL to improve both the water and sanitation conditions on UL’s campuses,” Ali said. “We can work together, and we will.”

Under the agreement, the LWSC will rehabilitate existing wells, dig new boreholes where necessary, build storage facilities, repair pipes and plumbing, and install new toilets and sinks.

UL, using funds provided by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, will supply the renovation materials. In turn, the LWSC will finance the strengthening of Capitol Hill’s connection to Monrovia’s water and sewer grid and the construction of new wells at Fendall.

The work will be jointly executed by LWSC technicians, UL’s Plant Operations Department (POD), and a newly appointed UL technical team.

Also present at the meeting was UL’s Interim Vice President for Administration, Sehmah R. Jallah, who directed POD, led by Jefferson Walker, to immediately clean all campus bathrooms to prepare for the renovation.

“The renovation workers deserve a clean and clutter-free space in which to get going,” Jallah said.

Dr. Maparyan praised the collaboration as a long-awaited breakthrough for the nation’s flagship university.

“This is the collaboration we have been waiting for,” she said. “We can see a light at the end of the tunnel. UL’s students, faculty, staff, and guests will, at long last, have the dignified facilities worthy of the nation’s flagship university.”
