Two Eminent African Statesmen to Address Dr. Amos C. Sawyer Annual Public Lecture and High-level Gala Dinner
Two eminent African Statesmen and academics, Dr. Abdoulaye Bathil y, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and Dr. Adbel El Fatau Musah, Commissioner, Political Affairs, Peace and Security at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) headquarters in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria will deliver Special Speeches at the Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer Public Lecture on Education, Governance, Democracy and Development and the high-level gala on June 15, 2024.
Dr. Bathily will serve as keynote speaker at the June 15 memorial event in honor of the Late Professor Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, Former Interim President of Liberia, Eminent Statesman, Academic, and Pan-Africanist. The event will take place at the University of Liberia Fendall Campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County.
The June 15 annual Public Lecture is a flagship program of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Liberia and the Amos C. Sawyer Educational Foundation established by the family and friends of Prof. Amos C. Sawyer to continue the works of the illustrious Professor and Political Scientist.
Dr. Adbel El Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria will address a high-level gala dinner on June 15, the birthday anniversary of Professor Amos Claudius Sawyer. The high-level gala dinner will be held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex, Congo Town.
Meanwhile, the Amos C. Sawyer inaugural public lecture will be attended by former presidents, eminent Liberians, distinguished academics, scholars and professors from the University of Liberia, religious leaders, officials of government, members of the diplomatic corps, President, Vice Presidents, Deans and Academic Directors of the University of Liberia. Others to attend include the Dean and academic team of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, political leaders, members of the Civil Society and student from the Department of Political Science at Sawyer College, among others.
The public lecture is intended to advance the works and ideals of Professor Sawyer as well as provide a platform for scholars and practitioners to shed light on the progress made on democratic development in Africa. The event will focus on understanding the role of inter-governmental structures such as the United Nations, African Union and regional bodies like ECOWAS in strengthening governance and democracy in member states.
Also, the flagship program is to shed light specific contributions and challenges faced regional bodies on democratic development beyond the signing of protocols and treaties with specific case to be examined by speakers and panelists.
The former Liberia College was renamed Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities on April 2, 2022 through a presidential proclamation by the former President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah to honor Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, former professor and Dean of the College.
The college, the fourth oldest tertiary institution in Africa and second in West Africa was established in 1862, barely fifteen years after the independence of Liberia. The College offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Work degrees in several academic disciplines. It contains 16 academic departments and units and over 300 distinguished faculty members including Doctoral and Master’s degree holders.
The Amos C. Sawyer college is under the supervision Prof. Dr. Josephus M. Gray, who is the current Dean of the College. Dr. Gary is also Sharda University in India Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia.
