Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel Tweah has asked communities in Liberia to be developmental partners to the Government of Liberia in support to its Pro Poor Agenda for Progress Development (PAPD).
Speaking Sunday, 16 August 2020 in Brewerville at the launch of a newly-organized community development organization conned “Concerned Development Initiative (CDI)” with the motto: “Working Together for Success”, Tweah said the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)-led government will work with any community that undertakes self-help development initiatives, because development takes roots when the people from down the ladder takes the lead with support from the Government.
The Christian Community on Sunday launched what they called “Concerned Development Initiative (CDI)” with a motto: “Working Together for Success” under the theme: “Self-help Initiatives that Buttress National Government Efforts in Nation Building.” Under this initiative, the CDI intends to undertake self-help projects to give their community a facelift being a new community that is popping up in Brewerville city.
The CDI which has earmarked four top priorities in their community, including construction of market, rehabilitation of their roads and laying up of allies, electrification, among others have said self-help initiatives will serve as wake-up call for the national government to come in to assist.
According to Mr. Konah Roberts, Co-chair Council of Eminent Persons in the Christian Community, formerly Back Bush Community, the CDI during the outbreak of COVID-19 in Liberia, undertook self-help projects by doing awareness on the dangers of Coronavirus, distribution of protective items and rehabilitation of their main roads into the community.
Minister Tweah noted that these are the self-help initiatives the Government will be glad to support. He said if communities work with the government to solve complex problems the communities will be better. He urged the Christian Community in Brewerville to design programs that will keep young girls in school in efforts to combat teenage-pregnancies. Tweah also wants CDI set up a community development center where young people can gather to study and focus on academics.
He applauded the CDI, which comprises more females than males in the Christian Community, for organizing themselves to engage in developmental projects to buttress the government Pro Poor Agenda for Progress and Development.
He said community development organizations is the way to go to support the government in its development drive. Tweah then pledged US$2,000 on behalf of himself and similar amount in behalf of Presidential Affairs Minister Nathaniel McGill as initial contribution to CDI’s developmental projects in the New Christian Community in Brewerville.
He vowed to set up a meeting with President Weah and other Cabinet Ministers for the CDI to present its development proposal for support and the way forward. He admonished every community in Liberia to organize themselves for developmental needs.
Meanwhile, CDI Chairperson, Mrs. Christian A. Segbo lauded Minister Tweah for his support and pledged that CDI will be community-driven and will endeavor in its might to achieve all their goals.
