To Address Violence Against Women In Politics, 22 Political Parties And NEC Sign MoU
As Liberians anxiously await the holding of a peaceful elections come October 10, 2023, a major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was today signed between the National Elections Commission (NEC) and over 22 political parties for the implementation of a minimum 30% Gender Quota for candidate listing in the 2023 general elections took place today, May 11, 2023 at the Monrovia City Hall.
The theme of the occasion was “Increasing Women’s Political Participation in elections thru the full implementation on of Section 4.5 B and C of the New Elections Law”, was graced by international partners including UN Women, UNDP, Irish Aid, Swedish Aid, ECOWAS, EU, amongst others.
At the start of the program, the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, urged political parties to abide the signed MoU which she noted will be in the interest of the country, and further admonished political parties’ leaders to increase women participation within their respective political parties.
In their remarks, international and local partners of NEC expressed thanks and appreciation to officials of the political parties who formed part of the exercise, and further called on them to increase women participation in politics.
Speaking on behalf of the political parties, the National Chairman of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Mulbah Morlu pledged commitment to the MoU signed by the NEC and all the political parties.
