The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has today (Tuesday) confirmed the dismissal of general secretary Amr Fahmy and the appointment of his replacement, Mouad Hajji, following the latest allegations of malpractice leveled against president Ahmad.
The CAF today said the restructuring of its administration took place at an Executive Committee meeting held in Cairo last week. Along with the news on Fahmy and Hajii, the CAF detailed the “amicable departure” of deputy general secretary in charge of administration and finance, Essadik Alaoui.
The firing of Fahmy comes amid reports in recent days that the Egyptian official had levelled multiple allegations of misconduct against Ahmad. The Reuters news agency, citing a document sent on March 31 by Fahmy to a Fifa body that investigates alleged ethics breaches, said Ahmad has been accused of ordering his general secretary to pay bribes of $20,000 (€17,700) into accounts of African football association presidents.
The document also accuses Ahmad of costing CAF an extra $830,000 by ordering equipment through a French intermediary company called Tactical Steel. Ahmad has also been accused of harassing four female members of CAF’s staff, seeking to increase Moroccan representation within the organisation against its statutes and over-spending more than $400,000 of CAF money on vehicles in Egypt and Madagascar, where a satellite office has been set up in his home nation.
The latest allegations against Ahmad come after Liberian official Musa Bility in February resigned from two senior positions within CAF, claiming that the president was taking the governing body in the “wrong direction”.
CAF said Hajji is “known in the football world”, having previously served in various capacities at the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
