Speaker of Ghanaian Parliament Pays Courtesy Visit to President Boakai

Executive Mansion, Monrovia,–– The Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, paid a courtesy visit to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia on March 13, 2025.

This visit highlights the enduring diplomatic relations between Liberia and Ghana and reaffirms both nations’ commitment to strengthening regional cooperation.

During the meeting, President Boakai and Speaker Bagbin engaged in discussions focusing on key areas including:

* Parliamentary Collaboration: Both leaders emphasized the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue and agreed to enhance legislative practices through shared experiences and capacity-building initiatives. This collaboration aims to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance in both countries.

* Economic Partnerships: The discussions highlighted the significance of boosting bilateral trade and investment. In 2023, Liberia exported goods worth $27 million to Ghana, with refined petroleum and palm oil being the primary products.  Both parties expressed interest in diversifying trade portfolios to foster economic growth and development.

* Regional Security: Recognizing the shared challenges within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) framework, the leaders discussed strategies to enhance cooperation in combating security threats. They reiterated their commitment to peacekeeping and stability initiatives in the region.

President Boakai expressed appreciation for Ghana’s consistent support and collaboration on regional matters. He emphasized Liberia’s dedication to working closely with Ghana to promote democratic governance, sustainable development, and regional integration.

Speaker Bagbin conveyed gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthening ties with Liberia. He underscored the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue in advancing shared goals and addressing challenges collectively.

This visit coincides with a three-day Legislative Engagement Retreat ongoing at the Farmington Hotel in Margibi County, scheduled from March 13 to 15, 2025.

The retreat, themed “Unity, Integrity, and Modernization,” aims to emphasize the importance of unity within the House of Representatives in strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law.

Distinguished guests, including Honorable Ibrahim Rassin Bundu, Majority Leader in the Parliament of Sierra Leone, and members of the Liberia Council of Churches, are also in attendance.

This visit follows President Boakai’s meeting with Ghana’s President-Elect John Dramani Mahama in December 2024 and his attendance of the inauguration, reflecting the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.
