The National Electoral Commission (NEC), Sierra Leone on Saturday in Freetown released 25% of the processed votes of the March 7 presidential, parliamentary and local council elections.
According a dispatch from Freetown, quoting official results, the candidate of the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) Dr. Samura Kamara got 44.6%; Rtd Brig. Julius Maada Bio of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) received 42%, while Kabdeh Yimkellah of the National Grand Alliance (NGC) is third with 6.6% of the processed votes.
NEC Chair Mohamed N’fah Alie-Conteh who announced the results at a Press Conference appealed for calm explaining that the final results would be released as soon as possible.
He said that NEC had met with representatives of political parties, conducted them round its Tally facilities and taken on board the issues raised by the parties on the processing of the results.
The electoral law provides for a presidential run-off vote if no candidate gains 55% of the vote in the first round balloting.
There are 16 presidential candidates including two women and some 789 contenders for the 124 contested seats in the 144-member parliament.
