According to a local daily, The Hot Pepper Newspaper, quoting sources from the United States suggesting that things are going from bad to worse for the Government of President George Manneh Weah with the growing economic hardship Liberians are being faced with.
The failure of the Liberian Government headed by world’s soccer star to concur with the international Community for the establishment of War Crime Court in Liberia may deepen the nightmare of majority of the Country’s citizens after the imposition of sanctions on Liberia.
As all eyes are opened as to the acceptance and implementation of Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations, which includes a War Crime Court for Liberia, but to the contrary, Liberians are also calling on the International Community to pressure the Liberian Government for its success.
According to the paper, report from Washington speaks of the United States and the greater international community are threatening serious sanctions on the Liberian Government, and certain officials in particular, if they do not fully implement the TRC recommendations, especially the one recommending a war crimes court.
According to the paper’s source, some of the officials involved will be accused of aiding and abetting war and economic criminals and obstruction of justice for refusing to establish the court to punish alleged perpetrators of war crimes.
The paper’s source named some of those to be sanctioned, that is placed on asset freeze and travel ban are the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bhofal Chambers, who cannot at the moment go to the United States; and Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Albert Chie, who the paper said was recently denied visa by the United States embassy in Monrovia.
Others are the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gbehzongar Findley, who can only be granted visa to go to the United Nations. The paper’s source further revealed that Minister Findley has been denied visa twice by the US embassy to travel to America. The paper also said the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel McGill is also listed to be sanctioned by the International Community.
The US sanctions list includes Montserrado County Representative, Solomon George who, along with his children in 2016, was stopped at an airport in the U.S and barred from stepping on U.S. soli for alleged bribery in the House of Representatives; Representative Acarous Gray, a stalwart of the ruling party, and the Party’s National Chairman, Mulbah Morlu.
More names of those to be sanctioned by the U.S. are expected to be featured in subsequent report, according to the paper.
