A local non-governmental organization, Rescue Youth Alliance (REYA), has provided financial aid to 10 less-privileged students in Montserrado County. The project is aimed at assisting students whose parents are affected by the impact of COVID-19 Pandemic, get back to school.
The 10 beneficiaries were selected from Matadi Community School, C. William Brumskine Elementary School, N. V. Massaquoi Elementary and Junior School and the Special Project High School in Montserrado County following a transparent vetting process of 20 students.
Students from the Matadi Community Elementary School in Matadi, include: Darius Taylay of 4th grade and Miama Kiazolu of 5th grade, from the Nathaniel Varney Massaquo Elementary & Junior High school in West Point, include: Theresa Koikoi of 8th grade and Abubaka Jalloh of 9th grade; from C. Williams Brumskine Elementary School on Front Street include: Princess Morris of 3rd grade and Ebenezer W. Komoteh of 5th grade and from the Special Project Elementary, Junior & Senior High School in Stephen A. Tolbert Estate include: Abel L. Famah of 9th grade, Siaka S. Kamara of 9th grade, Angeline M. Perry of 9th grade and
Hawatta Fahnbulleh of 9th grade
Speaking at the pre-launching ceremony in Monrovia, the founder and executive director of REYA, Amb. Sylvester Cytric Choloplay, called on Liberians to collectively build Liberia’s educational system and stop depending on Liberian Government only.
Amb. Choloplay said, if Liberia’s educational system will be improved, there is a need that Liberians stop shifting blames and work individually in supporting Liberian students.
The Rescue Youth Alliance ‘s CEO at the same time appreciated his organization’s donors and partners who made the first project a success to providing financial aids to ten less-privileged students back to school (for academic school year 2020-2021).
He said the first project was made successful through the support and instrumentality of Generation Impact, a website run by a young innovative youth activist, Ms. Julia Schetelig and based in Germany.
“Our organization was first promoted and connected by Generation Impact that has been involving in various social and academic activities promoting youth and other impactful activities for youths,” Amb. Choloplay said.
According to him, Ms. Julia Schetelig is a passionate and friendly youth activist who connected Rescue Youth Alliance to her friend, Bineyam Nani Tumbo in the U.S.A, organized and created a GoFundMe account for the project which accumulated $500 for a successful project implementation in Liberia.
He further explained that the first project sponsored ten (10) less privileged children back to school; the kids he said are happy about the achievement of REYA and its partners.
Amb. Choloplay equally assured his REYA’s continuous commitment, saying, “look forward to working with Generation Impact and other NGOs in support of Goal Four (4) of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), which talks about quality education.
Also speaking at the occasion, the President of the Liberia National students Union (LINSU), Mr. Mohammed Kandhi Kamara, appreciated REYA for serving humanity. In his motivational remark, Kamara said LINSU was excited and reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to REYA.
Meanwhile, Kamara has encouraged Liberian students to be passionate about education and at the same time be in readiness of seeking academic opportunities.
He admonished Liberian students to utilize academic opportunities and practice the skills of reading that will make them be more passionate about education and stand a chance for better academic opportunities.
He described the local NGO group, Rescue Youth Alliance, as a sincere organization that needs to be supported for more progress in the Liberian educational sector.
“This organization is really sincere in improving the educational system of Liberian; and on behalf of LINSU as we promised to work with it, we call on other big NGOs and the Liberian Government to support Rescue Youth Alliance to realize its vison in our educational sector,” the LINSU’s president asserted.
