PUL To Launch National Media Peer Support Network Wednesday, Condemns Brutality Against Journalist In Grand Gedeh
The Press Union of Liberia will on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 launch the national media peer support network under the project: Strengthening Independent Media and Freedom of Information in Liberia project.
The Network is intended to monitor and counter crimes against journalists in Liberia and also enhance information sharing, mentoring, coaching, and guidance and to help journalist be alerted and cautious when performing their duties.
The Project is being sponsored by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF)] and implemented by Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa, Press Union of Liberia and the Department of Communications and Media Studies at the University of Liberia.
The Project is in support of the core value of the Press Union of Liberia which primarily focus on advocating for free expression, freedom of the press and journalists’ safety across the Country among others.
The Press Union of Liberia in a release said the project will mitigate the continual attacks on Journalists and Media workers as Journalists themselves will get involve in ensuring a safer environment for the free practice of their profession without violence and intimidation.
The PUL is therefore calling on all Journalists to assemble at the Union’s headquarters on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at 10am for the official launch of the project and join the network.
In a related development, the Press Union of Liberia has strongly condemned the brutality meted against the President of the Grand Gedeh Journalists Association Stephen Tarlue, allegedly by men believe to be supporters of Representative Candidate, Jeremiah Garwo Sokan
Journalist Tarlue who is the Manager of Voice of Gedeh Radio in Zwredru City, Grand Gedeh County, was severely injured on his body and properties damage.
The attacked on the Liberia Journalist while on his reportorial duties according to the PUL is barbaric and a gross violation of his Press Freedom protected by Liberian and International laws.
The PUL said the undemocratic act by those involve is intended to force journalists in the county to self-censorship and impede their works on a democratic state like Liberia.
The Union says it stands with the Grand Gedeh Journalist Association in taking the necessary legal action in their means to protect themselves, their right to free speech and freedom of the press as well as the Democracy of the country.
The Press Union of Liberia is therefore calling on Grand Gedeh County Police Detachment to ensure speedy investigation into the violence act and ensure the necessary legal punishment in line with the laws of Liberia.
The Union says it would not hesitate to proceed with legal action at the appropriate court of competent jurisdiction that will serve as a deterrent for would be violators of the rights of Journalists.
The PUL sees the brutality meted against Journalist Tarlue, the president of the Grand Gedeh Journalist Association as an affront and a slap in the face of our young democracy and warn all politicians in the constant habit of intimidating and brutalizing journalists.
