The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) is set to mark its 62nd anniversary on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, with a celebration centered on the role of independent media in strengthening democracy, accountability, and sustainable development.
The anniversary will take place in Monrovia under the theme, “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development.” The observance comes at a critical time as questions surrounding journalists’ welfare, press freedom, professional ethics, and the economic sustainability of Liberia’s media sector remain paramount.
According to the PUL, the day’s activities will begin with a grand parade through Monrovia, followed by an indoor program featuring keynote addresses and a high-level panel discussion on strategies for strengthening independent journalism and its contribution to national progress.
Beyond the formal celebrations, the Union plans to use the occasion to highlight persistent challenges confronting the media industry, including press freedom violations, ethical breaches, limited professional opportunities, and the urgent need for stronger institutional support for journalists.
As part of the event, the PUL will release a comprehensive report from the National Media Council of Liberia detailing recent cases involving alleged ethical breaches, infringements on press freedom, and ongoing challenges to freedom of speech and expression. The report’s release is expected to reignite debate over the balance between protecting journalists’ rights and enforcing professional standards across the industry.
Another central focus of the anniversary will be the Union’s renewed drive to construct its permanent National Headquarters. The proposed facility is envisioned as a dedicated hub for press freedom advocacy, professional training, ethical monitoring, and the protection of media personnel.
The PUL expects approximately 150 participants to attend the event, bringing together journalists, media executives, civil society leaders, journalism students, government officials, diplomats, and private-sector stakeholders.
In preparation for the event, official anniversary souvenir T-shirts and caps are currently on sale at the Union’s headquarters on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor, with additional merchandise being distributed to media practitioners across the country.
The full itinerary, including the announcement of keynote speakers and panelists drawn from international finance, diplomacy, law, government, and the press, will be officially released on Monday, September 28.
PUL President Julius Kanubah has called on journalists, communication practitioners, and the general public to actively participate, framing the anniversary as a vital opportunity for learning, networking, professional solidarity, and national dialogue.
For PUL members, attendance is being treated as a key requirement to maintain good standing, as the leadership emphasizes that the milestone should serve not only to celebrate the Union’s 62-year history, but also to critically map out the future of journalism and free expression in Liberia.
