Public Works, Local Contractors Sign Contractual Agreements

  • for the installation of solar lights (streetlights)

Monrovia, Liberia — The Liberian government, through the Ministry of Public Works (MPW), has signed a major contract with two Liberian-owned construction firms to install solar-powered streetlights across Monrovia and its surrounding communities. This initiative, which aims to enhance urban safety and reduce pressure on the national electricity grid, is being funded under the Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP).

The contracts were awarded to Quality Group of Construction Company and RESCO Incorporated, two local firms with a strong track record in civil works and renewable energy projects. The companies will be responsible for the supply, installation, and testing of all-in-one integrated solar streetlights, which will be mounted on galvanized steel poles designed to withstand Liberia’s tropical climate.

During the official signing ceremony, Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Daniel O. Sando described the project as a major milestone. “This signing marks a critical intervention to improve road safety, nighttime visibility, and reduce the burden on the overstretched Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) grid,” Minister Sando said. He added that the project aligns with the government’s commitment to building safer, more inclusive cities and will particularly benefit vulnerable residents.

The project will target major roads and high-density communities that have historically lacked adequate street lighting. The installation will cover approximately 23.49 kilometers across several key corridors, including:

  • Neezoe to Pipeline Road (2.23 km)
  • Wood Camp to Parker Paint (1.8 km)
  • Zayzay Community to Duport Road (3.8 km)
  • Voker Mission Road (1.24 km)
  • Weaver Street (0.83 km)
  • Clara Town (1.6 km)
  • Doe Community (1.88 km)
  • OAU Hotel Africa Road (2.74 km)
  • Jamaica Road (1.27 km)
  • Banjor Community Road (2.5 km)
  • Logan Town to Mombo Town (3.6 km)

The Public Works Ministry intentionally awarded the contracts to domestic firms in line with the government’s Local Content Policy. “By awarding these contracts to Quality Group of Construction and RESCO Inc., we’re not just installing streetlights; we’re building local capacity, supporting job creation, and driving inclusive economic growth,” Minister Sando stated.

A representative from Quality Group expressed gratitude for the government’s confidence, pledging to deliver quality installations that meet international standards.

The project is supported by the Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP), with financial backing from international development institutions such as the World Bank. Installation works are expected to begin within the next four weeks and are scheduled for completion within six months.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Ministry announced a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to prevent the use of substandard materials. For residents, this project promises a tangible improvement in their quality of life. As one community leader from Clara Town noted, “This project will not only light our streets—it will bring safety, security, and hope to our neighborhoods.”
