Since the ascendancy of President George Manneh Weah as Liberia’s newest leader on the bloc, several protests have taken place in Monrovia and its environs, with many of the protestors putting forward their demands with the hope that their plight will be addressed.
The latest to take place which eventually led to clashes between the protestors and the police was a fierce drama by hundreds of students of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) who blocked the convoy of President Weah who was finding his way to work at the Foreign Ministry in demand of their teachers’ pay.
As the situation became tense, officers of both the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Executive Protective Services (EPS) begin to apply force in order to disburse the huge crowd of students who came from various MCSS schools in Monrovia and its environs, the then tension turned more serious with many of the students sustaining serious injuries.
As both forces became emotionally charged with violence, stone throwing from the students took the order of the day, while the police and the EPS who were well armed to their teeth got furious; beating any student who ever came closer to the President’s convoy, as police and EPS officers threw teargas on the students many sought refuge on the main campus of the University of Liberia.
This situation made many of the protestors to receive the anger of the police and officers of the EPS when dozens of them got wounded compelling some of the students to be rushed to some nearby clinics for immediate intervention, while others who ran for their lives after being chased out also got wounded.
In the wake of the protests, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning informs the public that salaries for teachers of the Monrovia Consolidated Schools System (MCSS) have been disbursed for September, 2019.
The Ministry states that out of the 1,223 MCSS’s teachers, nine hundred and ninety five (995) teachers with only Liberian Dollars Accounts have been paid their total salaries or 100% for the month of September in Liberian Dollars.
The Ministry further states that the balance of two hundred and twenty eight teachers (228) with both Liberian Dollars and United States Dollars Accounts, constituting 80% and 20% percent respectively, have already been disbursed to the GN Bank.
The Ministry adds that the Liberian Dollars component of 20% for the 228 employees has already been credited by the Bank while the USD component already disbursed by the Ministry is being processed for crediting to teachers’ accounts by the Bank.
The Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) provides primary and secondary education to the population of the Monrovia metropolitan area. The MCSS was established by government charter in 1964 under the Act to Amend the Education Law to Create the Monrovia Consolidated School System.
