President Boakai’s Committee Engages Airport Authority to Tackle Power Outage and Secure Long-Term Solutions

Monrovia, Liberia – April 3, 2025: Following a recent power outage that caused temporary disruptions at Roberts International Airport (RIA), a high-level investigation committee established by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr., is currently engaged in an ongoing meeting with the management of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA). The meeting aims to thoroughly address the incident and collaboratively develop sustainable, long-term solutions to guarantee a stable and reliable power supply at the nation’s primary airport.

The investigation committee, spearheaded by the National Security Advisor to the President, Kofi Woods, has been specifically tasked with conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the power outage. The disruption, which occurred recently, was reportedly triggered by a shock that affected the transmitter line and subsequently damaged the automatic switch system at RIA.

The ongoing discussions involve a detailed examination of the factors that led to the power failure. The committee is expected to leverage its findings to formulate concrete recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future, thereby ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the airport.

This proactive engagement is a direct outcome of President Boakai’s commitment to addressing the power crisis at the airport and is part of the committee’s broader mandate to conduct a thorough investigation. The committee is expected to compile a detailed report outlining its findings and a comprehensive plan of action for President Boakai’s review and implementation.

Prior to this meeting, both the LAA and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) had conveyed their commitment to resolving the power supply challenges at RIA during a hearing held on April 2, 2025, by the Senate Joint Committee on Hydrocarbons, Energy, and Environment. This demonstrates a multi-faceted approach to tackling the issue, involving legislative oversight and executive action.

In the immediate aftermath of the power outage, efforts are already underway to rectify the technical damage that caused the disruption. The Liberia Airport Authority is working in close coordination with President Boakai’s investigation committee to not only address the immediate aftermath but also to identify and implement robust, long-term solutions. These measures are intended to significantly improve the power infrastructure at Roberts International Airport, ultimately ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operations for all stakeholders and passengers moving forward.

The collaborative approach between the President’s committee and the LAA underscores the seriousness with which the government is treating this issue, recognizing the critical importance of a reliable and efficient international airport for Liberia’s connectivity and economic development.
