CONGO TOWN, MONROVIA — In a poignant display of national solidarity, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., paid a formal condolence visit to former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The visit, held at the former Vice President’s residence in Congo Town, was an expression of the state’s support as she mourns the untimely passing of her son, Charles Philip Taylor, Jr.

Charles Philip Taylor, the son of former President Charles Ghankay Taylor and former Vice President Howard-Taylor, passed away on January 20, 2026, at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia. His death has resonated across the political landscape, drawing leaders together to honor a family in grief.

During his visit to the Taylor residence—located opposite the YWCA Compound—President Boakai offered words of comfort on behalf of the Government and the People of Liberia. The President described the loss of Mr. Taylor as a “painful and profound” blow to the family and the nation.

“In moments of personal grievance, we must find strength in our shared humanity,” President Boakai remarked. He emphasized that regardless of political affiliations, the bonds of empathy and national solidarity must remain the cornerstone of Liberian society, especially during times of such deep personal tragedy.

Charles Philip Taylor, Jr. was known not only for his prominent lineage but also for his personal professional achievements. He was a highly educated professional who contributed to the academic and technical profile of the nation’s youth.

He held a Master’s degree in Shipping and Port Administration from the prestigious Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana. His specialization in the maritime sector positioned him as part of a critical cadre of Liberians trained to manage the country’s blue economy and port infrastructure.

The atmosphere at the Congo Town residence was one of solemn reflection as friends, family, and former colleagues of the Howard-Taylor and Boakai administrations gathered to pay their respects. The President’s visit is seen as a significant gesture of reconciliation and respect for the office of the former Vice Presidency, reinforcing a culture of civility within the Liberian leadership.

Funeral arrangements and official memorial services are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days. The Executive Mansion has indicated that the government will continue to stand in support of the former Vice President during this period of bereavement.
