Political Parties Should Not Undermine the peace in Liberia – Says UN SRSG

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão urged political parties and individual candidates in Liberia not to undermine the peace in Liberia.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday August 16, 2023 at the headquarters of One UN House in Monrovia, the SRSG said citizens should be responsible in these elections, not to engage in violence, Liberia has come a long way to achieve this peace.
Meanwhile, SRSG said he has spoken with the President of Liberia, H.E. George M. Weah, political parties and other stakeholders include the National Elections Commission about a peaceful Free, Fair, and Transparent elections in Liberia.
According to him, all political parties in Liberia should educate their supporters not to engage in electoral violence, elections are about relaxation not violence, stop using young people to achieve your goals as politicians, he said .
Meanwhile, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Leonardo Santos Simão said the UN will remain engaged at all levels with candidates, with the candidates who have signed the Farmington agreement, committing themselves to peaceful elections.
According to the UN SRSG, Liberia elections will mark a significant milestone in the repositioning of Liberia’s democracy.
He reaffirmed the UN’s continuous support towards peaceful elections, and urged all their efforts, including the signing of the Farmington River Declaration.
He said all political parties including stakeholders should keep the spirit of peace in these elections, they must adhere to the National Elections Commission law, he said.
