The Women and Children Section of the Liberia National Police (LNP) in Grand Gedeh County is investigating an Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) Officer, Sgt. Jerry Kyne, on allegation of raping a 16 year-old girl.
Making the disclosure in an interview with the Liberia News Agency Tuesday, Grand Gedeh County Attorney Isaac Williams explained that the protocol of investigating a military personnel, including handing him over to the Liberia National Police for prosecution is presently ongoing at the level of the AFL and Liberia National Police in the county.
Williams, however, maintained that appropriate action will be taken upon completion of the investigation.
When contacted, the Commander at the Women and Children Section, Samuel Paye, indicated that while preliminary investigations are ongoing, he reserves comments on the matter.
Meanwhile, a senior military officer at the Camp Wisner Military Barracks, Staff Sergeant Okay Joseph, told the Liberia News Agency at the County Administration Building that the suspect, AFL personnel Jerry Kyne, has been placed in confinement at the barracks and told to stay out of all activities while undergoing investigation.
“We are bitterly against the idea and strongly frown on the situation but this requires proper and thorough understanding of the matter,” Joseph said.
According to information provided the Liberia News Agency by Madam Patricia Gwyan, mother of victim, at about 9:00P.M on Monday, August 12, in Gbagbaville Community in Zwedru, the victim and her friend were on their way home when they met Kyne before her mother’s house.
Kyne held the victim’s hand and took her away on the pretext of sending her on an errand. She refused because of the time but he promised to give her some money.
According to her, he took the girl into an unfinished house in the community and forcefully slept with her.
She said when the girl got home and went to urinate she experienced severe pain, but after her mother was persistent in getting an explanation about what transpired between sher and the AFL officer, the victim narrated the incident
The mother then informed the community chairman who sent for Kyne the following day.
Kyne failed to turn up because, according to him, he was training on the football field.
Due to his continued resistance to respond to the call, the Community Chairman alerted the Liberia National Police on the matter.
