(LINA) – The Monrovia City Court has incarcerated an officer of the Liberia National Police (LNP) for allegedly shooting to death a motorcyclist early this month in the Red Light Soul Clinic Community.

Defendant Roosevelt Demann was on April 29 arrested by the LNP based on information that there was a shooting incident in the Red Light Community, and that a motorcyclist was shot dead in the process.

The defendant was escorted by the Police Support Unit (PSU) and Emergency Response Unit (ERU) to the Monrovia City Court as family members of the deceased waited to see him being brought to court for trial.

He was on Thursday arraigned before the court to answer to the charges of murder levied against him.

According to the Police charge sheet, the defendant was a commander assigned at the Police Depot in Paynesville, and that the deceased was a motorbike rider.

The Police charge sheet stated that the on April 29 the deceased was arrested by the defendant for traffic violation at about 9:00 p.m.

Upon arresting the deceased, the defendant ordered the rider to go with him to the Police depot, but the deceased refused to go, on grounds that it was late.

The Police charge sheet indicated that during the process, the defendant called two police officers to have the deceased’s motorbike impounded, but he (the deceased) resisted the impounding of his bike.

As a result, fighting broke up between them, during which the deceased was brutalized by the defendant.

The Police charge sheet asserted that the deceased tried to escape, but the defendant followed him until he got near his house in the Soul Clinic Community, where he was shot by the defendant in the back of his head.

The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Police charge pointed out that after the defendant noticed that the motorcyclist was dead, he shot himself in the palm as if the deceased was the one who shot him, eyewitnesses revealed.

During police investigation, the defendant admitted shooting the victim.

He is currently incarcerated at the Monrovia Central prison awaiting court trial.
